We are the concerned citizens of the South Coast of Oregon who are against the proposed LNG (liquefied natural gas) Import Terminal in this area and the 223 mile, 36 inch interstate Pacific Connector gas pipeline to the California border.
We are here to provide information on LNG and why we feel the proposed Liquefied Natural Gas Import Terminal should not be built in this area due to the dangers and economic impacts of having it so close to a populated area.

Feb 6th 2008: 300 Rally at Capitol Steps where both the
Southern Oregon and the Columbia River LNG terminal and
pipeline fights come together to oppose LNG terminals and
pipelines in Oregon.
Feb 8th 2008: U.S. Senator Gordon Smith sends a letter to
the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) asking
that they work more closely with State and Local Officials
and that they provide more meetings in Oregon to receive
public comment regarding the siting of proposed natural gas
pipelines in the state.
Feb 14th 2008: Gov. Ted Kulongoski sends a letter to FERC that insisted federal regulators halt all reviews of proposals
to build liquefied-natural-gas terminals in Oregon until they
study the issue of need and all alternatives for supplying natural
gas to the region.
March 7th 2008: Congressmen Peter DeFazio, David Wu, Earl Blumenauer and Congresswoman Darlene Hooley
send a letter to the chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission about the "inadequacy" of their process for
determining whether an LNG facility is built and where.
April 7, 2008: U.S. Senators Ron Wyden, Hillary Clinton, Joe Lieberman, Christopher Dodd and Barack Obama introduce
legislation to repeal a section of the Energy Policy Act
of 2005 that pre-empted state authority for licensing LNG
terminals and gave it to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
May 7th 2008: The Oregon Department of Energy releases a
report stating that imported LNG is not needed and conflicts
with the state’s greenhouse gas reduction law.
May 15th 2008: Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA) hears
SOPIP’s oral arguments against Coos County LNG Permit.
May 20th, 2008: Coos County voters turn out of office pro- Jordan Cove LNG County Commissioner John Griffith.
July 1st, 2008: Coast Guard letter calls Coos Bay "unsuitable for LNG."
July 15th 2008: Land Use Board of Appeals rejects Jordan Cove LNG Facility Conditional Use Permit, telling Coos
County less deference to the applicant and more public input
are required.
July 16, 2008: Jackson County Commissioners pass a resolution asking the federal government to halt the Jordan Cove
LNG terminal and California pipeline until need is proven.

What is LNG?
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is natural gas that has been supercooled down to
-259 degrees Fahrenheit. At that temperature natural gas condenses into a liquid.
In liquid form, natural gas takes up to 600 times less space than its gaseous state
making it feasible for transportation and storage.
Where Does LNG come from?
LNG is exported from places such as:
Abu Dhabi, Algeria, Australia, Brunei, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Libya, Malaysia,
Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad, Tobago, and U.S.(Alaska).
There does not appear to be a single LNG vessel operating today that is
U.S. owned and operated. None fly the U.S. flag.

If a LNG Import facility is sited here then about 6 or 7 times a month a LNG
vessel will enter our harbor carrying its highly visible and highly volatile cargo.
Our Bay Area will lose the use of its Harbor and our Airport could be
affected each time a LNG vessel visits, due to Stringent Security Requirements.
Can our Local Economy Afford this?
Just How Dangerous is LNG?
LNG can become highly unstable and exhibit intense pressure if it is not kept at
-259 degrees Fahrenheit. LNG can rapidly vaporize, expand and ignite to burn
people and property thousands of yards from the core of the fire. No precaution
or risk assessment can guarantee safety in case of accident, earthquake, or terrorism.

Why Does This Concern the Local Bay Area?
On November 22, 2004, a newly formed Colorado based company, Energy Products Development LLC, doing business in Oregon as the "Jordan Cove Energy Project", submitted a Notice of Intent (NOI) to the Oregon Department of Energy to build a LNG facility on the North Spit across from the North Bend Airport. Current plans include Jordan Cove Energy acquiring property from the Port, who is purchasing land from Weyerhaeuser for this project.
In July 2005, Fort Chicago Energy Partners LP, of Canada, acquired a majority stake in the Jordan Cove Energy Project. - www.fortchicago.com
The Jordan Cove Energy Project includes two storage tanks, each with the capacity to hold up to 160,000 cubic meters or
42 million gallons each of LNG.
This LNG facility will be across from our local airport and would not likely survive a 9/11 type attack or accident.
A large LNG spill, vapor cloud, & fire caused by accident, earthquake, or terrorist attack would have devastating impacts on our Bay Area.
