We are the concerned citizens of the South Coast of Oregon who are against the proposed LNG (liquefied natural gas) Import Terminal in this area and the 223 mile, 36 inch interstate Pacific Connector gas pipeline to the California border.
We are here to provide information on LNG and why we feel the proposed Liquefied Natural Gas Import Terminal should not be built in this area due to the dangers and economic impacts of having it so close to a populated area.

(Added 6/8/2007)
Has the Port Commission of Coos Bay Handled Shipbreaking,
Their Land Deal for the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal,
and Other Issues with Due Diligence?
What is LNG?
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is natural gas that has been supercooled down to
-259 degrees Fahrenheit. At that temperature natural gas condenses into a liquid.
In liquid form, natural gas takes up to 600 times less space than its gaseous state
making it feasible for transportation and storage.
Where Does LNG come from?
LNG is exported from places such as:
Abu Dhabi, Algeria, Australia, Brunei, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Libya, Malaysia,
Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad, Tobago, and U.S.(Alaska).
There does not appear to be a single LNG vessel operating today that is
U.S. owned and operated. None fly the U.S. flag.
If a LNG Import facility is sited here then about 6 or 7 times a month a LNG
vessel will enter our harbor carrying its highly visible and highly volatile cargo.
Our Bay Area will lose the use of its Harbor and our Airport could be
affected each time a LNG vessel visits, due to Stringent Security Requirements.
Can our Local Economy Afford this?
Just How Dangerous is LNG?
LNG can become highly unstable and exhibit intense pressure if it is not kept at
-259 degrees Fahrenheit. LNG can rapidly vaporize, expand and ignite to burn
people and property thousands of yards from the core of the fire. No precaution
or risk assessment can guarantee safety in case of accident, earthquake, or terrorism.
"An ignited LNG vapor cloud or large LNG pool fire can cause extensive damage to life and property"
California Energy Commission, July 2003
"A (LNG) Pool fire is intense, burning far more hotly and rapidly than oil or gasoline fires. It cannot be extinguished.........its thermal radiation may injure people and damage property a considerable distance from the fire itself."
CRS Report for Congress, Jan 28, 2004
"If about 3 million gallons of LNG spills onto the water from an LNG tanker ship, flammable vapors from the spill could travel up to 3 miles."
Professor Jerry Havens, August 16, 2005
Portland, OR - Billy Frank Conference Center
(JERRY HAVENS is a chemical engineer and director of the Chemical Hazards Research Center at the University of Arkansas. He helped write federal standards for estimating the size and intensity of fires involving LNG)
LNG Tanker ships will enter our harbor carrying around 37 million gallons of LNG.
....Roughly 3 billion cubic feet of gas....
The Oregonian - May 15, 2005
Why Does This Concern the Local Bay Area?
On November 22, 2004, a newly formed Colorado based company, Energy Products Development LLC, doing business in Oregon as the "Jordan Cove Energy Project", submitted a Notice of Intent (NOI) to the Oregon Department of Energy to build a LNG facility on the North Spit across from the North Bend Airport. Current plans include Jordan Cove Energy acquiring property from the Port, who is purchasing land from Weyerhaeuser for this project.
In July 2005, Fort Chicago Energy Partners LP, of Canada, acquired a majority stake in the Jordan Cove Energy Project. - www.fortchicago.com
The Jordan Cove Energy Project includes two storage tanks, each with the capacity to hold up to 160,000 cubic meters or
42 million gallons each of LNG.
This LNG facility will be across from our local airport and would not likely survive a 9/11 type attack or accident.
A large LNG spill, vapor cloud, & fire caused by accident, earthquake, or terrorist attack would have devastating impacts on our Bay Area.

North Bend / Coos Bay / Charleston, Oregon(Note Mileage Markers)
"For a nominal intentional (LNG) spill the hazard range could extend to 2500 m (1.553 miles). The actual hazard distances will depend on breach and spill size, site specific conditions, and environmental conditions." Sandia National Laboratories Report for the U.S. Government - December 2004
"We have a one to three mile range here that are credible hazard distances based on a tanker spill of one half of one tank or 3 to 4 million gallons of LNG. There are no real disagreements about this. If more is spilled it could be worse, obviously."
Portland OR - August 16, 2005 - Professor Jerry Havens - LNG Expert/Chemical Engineer/Director- Chemical Hazard Research Center at Univ of Arkansas
